Yes, we can!

Yes, vegans can indulge. Sure, most of the time most of us try to keep it as healthy as possible. But whenever we want to, we can eat cookies, and ice cream, and chocolate, and even the worst, greasiest, most artificial fast-food at times. Here is proof of our latest indulgence: french fries and faux gyro with ketchup. Since I got last-minute pangs of conscience I made some green peas and edamame to go with it. (Please excuse the blurry, weird photo - I was ravenous).

Apparently vegans can never stop thinking about how to make their food a little more healthy. So, this meal included beans. And, thinking of it, those were organic fries with nothing added when I bought them, not even salt. At least there is nothing I can say in defence of the faux gyro. Except for that it tasted great, actually the texture and taste were so "real" it was creepy.

I once made a fries + burger dinner for my parents: french fries and a soyburger - pan-fried tofu glazed with soy sauce and put on a bun with everything you could wish for on a hamburger. They were speechless. They never thought vegan food could be this good/evil/tasty/fast-food-like. But as I was saying: Yes, we can!

Regarding your comment on my blog post about blog widgets, what do you use that provides you with info about the Google search words people used to get to your blog?

Feel free to respond on my blog or let me know if you do here. I'm interested to find out what you use. Thanks.

Haha I LOVE how you started out by saying how unhealthy the meal was, but by the end of the post, you realized it was pretty darn healthy after all!

I don't think I've even ever had a non-vegan gyro. I wonder what they taste like...

That looks so good! We vegans can indulge ourselves from time to time too! Looks like you indulged yourself well. You know if you have any leftovers, there is a Missouri vegan who would be happy to take them off your hands. :-)

Yep, we all need to indulge sometimes. Is the veggie gyro a packaged food? Wonder if it's available here in the states?

Ha, ha! It looks like we had very similar cravings last night. I was wanting some comfort food (harkening back to childhood) and had an uncharacteristic meal: vegan BBQ riblets, tater tots with ketchup, and frozen veggie mix (corn, beans, carrots, etc). It totally reminded me of "school lunch" trays of yore!

@veg*triathlete: yes, those cravings for childhood comfort food :-)...

@noodle: I googled the two brands I know and both seem to be German based companies. Unfortunately I couldn't find good, big pictures of the boxes to give you an idea of what they look like, just small, blurry ones

but, if that helps: here in Smalltown, Germany, I cannot find vegan ice cream, waffles, cookies, cakes, silken tofu... a lot of market potential on both sides of the Atlantic, it seems. companies, do you hear us???

I love country potatoes, which are thicker than regular fries. Yes we should indulge ourselves. It's Easter soon!

Anke, your meal looks great. I am all for indulgence. I find it funny that the concept of indulgence for a healthy vegan is *usually* very antithetical to what the word indulgence has come to mean in our societies.
I really dig sweet potato fries....yum yum, but your organic frites look great. I suggest a trip to Brussels - there are fries everywhere in this country!!! I don't think they (or much else) is organic though.

i eat french fries (I bake 'em) every week. shh...

@ missblueberry: yeah, I heard that in Belgium french fries are a staple :-) I once lived in Spain, and there "potatoes" was synonym with "french fries" - I lived there for almost a year and was not once served a boiled potato. I really love them both ways, though

@ happy herbivore: they sell the fries lightly pre-fried, and then I bake them in the oven. overall they contain something around 6-10% fat - not good but acceptable for a once-a-quarter treat :-)

I'd rather eat the peas than the fries... at least right now.

what a nice platter! i think that a familiar food definitely makes non-vegans warm up to vegan food. like you said, "yes, we can!"

That plate is making me hungry! Anke, you're right- I guess vegans can never stop thinking about ways to make food healthier. And although this looks pretty decadent, it is quite healthy too!

haha, I do that, too! Make a big plate of greasy indulgent food and then throw some spinach on it cause that uhhhhh... balances it out, right? anyway, I'm so jealous of your gyro! I used to LOVE that stuff.

It's not wierd at all. Even without the peas :D hehe.. who says vegans must eat healthy? I eat evil unhealthy stuff very often. Yea, it's strange I got this "try to make it a lil healthier" syndrome too...

I have not heard of gyro until now, thanks for the post!
